When it comes to keeping baby warm and content at sleep time, there’s alot more options out there beyond the standard baby blanket – here’s what you need to know about blankets, swaddles and wearable blankets + our recommendations for 2016 of the best rated and reviewed ones.
Blankets and swaddles
For the first few months, baby will be swaddled and you can choose from a number of different blankets or purpose made swaddles right for the temperature to keep them warm. Blankets are always a very popular gift, so you probably won’t have to worry too much about having enough of them!
If you want to swaddle your baby the old fashioned way with an actual blanket, not just any old baby blanket will do. So which ones are good for swaddling?
aden + anais are kind of the ‘go to’ brand for excellent quality swaddle blankets. The classic muslim ones are super soft, are a great size at 47″ x 47″ and the fabric is slightly stretchy which makes them excellent swaddlers.
There’s a huge array of colors/prints to choose from so picking just one pack can be difficult 🙂
These are also 100% cotton, but they are a flanel which makes them feel a little more cosy than the aden + anais muslin blankets. Not only are they soft and cosy for baby, they come in many stylish colors/prints and also have a handy ‘how to swaddle’ instruction label sewn in.
There’s a heap of different swaddlers out there – what is excellent for one baby might not be as good for another. Instead of stocking up on a few of one brand/style, get a couple of different styles if you can so that you have options if one doesn’t work as well for your little one as you had hoped. Some of the most popular and highly recommended include:
The Woombie is really easy to use – just zip it up and you’re done, no velcro or other fastenings that can come undone. This particular Woombie has a mesh panel to help prevent overheating which makes it great for year round use. It comes in a heap of different adorable colors/patterns too. There are cheaper versions similar to the Woombie, but none of them tend to be AS good.
Made from 100% cotton terry knit, ergonomically designed to position baby’s hips properly and secure their arms, this really is one awesome swaddler that is well worth the price.
Touted as the world’s most pediatrician recommended swaddle blanket, the miracle blanket is extremely popular. Made from 100% cotton, it’s suitable for year round and one size fits all up to the age of 14 weeks. The miracle blanket is designed to help you create the perfect swaddle every time that your little one won’t break out of.
If you’ve worn merino wool yourself – you’ll know the benefits of this awesome natural fibre. It’s a thin fabric yet it regulates the body temperature extremely well. The Coocooi is designed to allow baby a little more freedom of movement than other swaddles. It is on the pricier side for a swaddle, but if you love a little bit of luxury, this is definitely one to consider.
Once your little one is past the swaddling stage, a wearable blanket (also referred to as a sleep sack or baby sleeping bag) is highly recommended instead of loose blankets, again because of the suffocation hazard the blanket can pose.
Which ones are best:
HALO are one of the most popular brands, with their ‘SleepSack’. They come in micro-fleece as well as cotton so you can find one that is right for your climate.
If you’re after a high quality wearable blanket for your little one, you can’t go past the Woolino. It’s made from beautifully soft hypoallergenic merino wool which is known for it’s ability to regulate the body temperature – it can keep baby warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. Unlike cheaper polyester wearable blankets, the natural fibres of the Woolino make it breathable which also reduces the risk of overheating.
The Baby Deedee is a really well priced baby sleeping bag suitable for colder temperatures and the winter months. It’s similar to a normal duvet, with a cotton outer and polyester filling which makes it feel super cozy.
The SwaddleDesigns sleep sack is beautifully soft and plush both on the inside and the outside. Lots of parents have been converted over from only using HALO to this brand and while it’s a little bit more expensive than most HALO styles, it’s well worth it.
