When my first baby arrived 10 months ago, life changed a lot including our money (ok, as a mom you already know that!). We went from having two incomes and a comfortable enough budget, down to one income and having to be far more strict with our spending. Add in the new expenses to our budget for the baby and there wasn’t a lot left over. I had done online surveys in the past to make some extra cash while I was studying and knew it was a fairly easy thing to do on my own schedule. So once I was a bit more used to having a newborn and wanted to help bring in some extra $ I updated my profile in my existing accounts and signed up to a few new online survey sites.
How much can you earn?
Now you won’t get rich by doing surveys online, but you can bring in an extra couple of hundred a month in cash and/or gift cards just by giving your opinion. The amount of $ you earn could be more or it could be less – it really depends on how many surveys you do, and also the type and number of surveys you’re sent depends on your own household demographics. I did notice though that when I was doing surveys this time around as a Mom I seem to be getting lots more surveys as compared to when I was studying, didn’t have kids and wasn’t the main person doing the shopping for the household etc.
What I like about surveys
The thing I really like about doing surveys is I can do them when it suits me – usually that’s while I’m watching TV, nursing my baby girl or when I’m online wasting time scrolling through Facebook or something. I really enjoy doing some of the surveys too and giving my opinion on new products and things. I mainly cash out my rewards in Amazon gift cards which I use to buy essentials for the house and new baby items, and I also redeem some in cash which helps us have more fun money or pay a bill or two.
What sites can you earn good rewards with?
There are A LOT of online survey companies out there but they’re definitely not all created equal. Some are downright scams while others just don’t send many surveys so it takes forever to earn enough to redeem your rewards. There are plenty of good ones though – here are the best sites I recommend.
1. Harris Poll Online
Harris Poll are one of the sites I redeem rewards from quite often. I also really like that when you take a survey, in addition to the points you earn you can also go into a $10,000 sweepstakes draw. Along with the online surveys, you can also occasionally get invitations to things like in person focus groups which generally pay really good $ for an hour or two of your time. As with the other programs, rewards include gift cards to Amazon and lots of other stores.
MySurvey generally send out a really good amount of surveys, so there are lots of opportunities to earn rewards and cash out. They generally pay $1 to $5 per survey and have a low minimum payout. You can get paid in cash via PayPal or get gift vouchers to Amazon and other stores.
3. Pinecone Research
Pinecone is my absolute favorite survey site. They pay $3 for every survey you complete and the surveys are fairly quick to complete. I also occasionally get sent products to test at home which is a bit of fun. There’s no minimum to cash out, and they pay out very quickly as well. You can redeem rewards via payment to your PayPal account, via check and a number of other options. I get sent around 2 surveys per week from Pinecone – I wish they sent more!
Because they’re so easy to work with, they are very popular and only take new members at select times throughout the year. I’ve included them in this post as they are currently taking new members – I wouldn’t tell you about it if you couldn’t join I don’t know how long they’ll be accepting new members for, so if you’re interested, sign up before it’s too late.
i-Say is another site that I redeem rewards from quite often. The number of reward points you earn per survey is usually quite good and they also have a loyalty program that allows you to earn bonus points once you’ve taken a number of surveys. You can redeem your points for vouchers to Amazon and lots of other places.
YouGov surveys are short and quick, most taking around 5 minutes to complete. Their surveys are focused on getting your views on current affairs as well as products and brands which I usually find quite interesting to give my opinion on. Redeem points for rewards in cash, merchandise and gift cards including VISA, Amazon, Walmart and lots of others. They’re currently offering a 2000 points sign up bonus too
Swagbucks is great because you not only earn points called SB for taking surveys, you can also earn for heaps of other things you already do online – the easiest of all is searching online from their page instead of Google, Bing etc. Rewards include gift cards to Amazon and heaps of other stores, cash paid to your PayPal account or Visa pre-paid cards.
- I’d recommend signing up for all the sites to begin with. The more you’re a member of, the more surveys you’ll be sent and more rewards you can earn.
- Check your email to confirm your account. Once you’ve signed up on the survey website, most will send you an email that you’ll need to open to activate your account and start receiving surveys.
- Complete your profile information – the more info the better the site can match surveys to you.
Thanks to new mom Abbey for sharing how she helps with the family budget every month – we hope it helps you too!
