How does this sound for a way to make some extra cash? Sit down with a group of people for an hour or two, give your opinion on a product, maybe get given some snacks and refreshments, then get handed an envelope with $100 in it for you at the end?
That’s pretty much how focus groups go, and they’re an excellent way to make some really good money for a short amount of your time. As a stay at home mom, I’ve tried and do quite a few different things to bring in some extra cash. The easiest way that I know ANYONE can make money is by getting paid for your opinion.
Here’s the lowdown on how this works, and how you can earn money from focus groups too.
What sort of things will you be asked to give your opinion on?
Focus groups are held for a HUGE range of things. Ice cream, coffee drinks, baby items, fruit, advertisements, cleaning/household products and TV programming are just some of the things myself and friends have been to focus groups for over the years.
Sometimes you get to taste food or test products and get free samples, others may just want your opinion.
How do you get to do focus groups?
Sign up with a few market research companies and they’ll contact you when a focus group comes up that you may be suitable for. You’ll generally be asked some screening questions to make sure you fit the demographic or other requirements for the particular group either over the phone or via email.
See the end of this post for info on finding good companies to register with.
How often can you do them?
Now it would be awesome to be able to do 1 or 2 a week and earn a pretty decent income, but unfortunately the opportunities don’t come around that frequently. On average you could participate in a few focus groups each year. When they do come around that bit of extra cash for such a short amount of your time sure is nice though!
How much do you get paid?
The most common payment is about $50 to $150 for 1 to 3 hours of your time. Though there are opportunities out there that pay more – up to $400! It really does vary depending on how long the group goes for and if there are any tasks you need to do before or after the actual focus group.
Are they only in person?
Most focus groups are held in person but there are occasionally some that are conducted over the phone or online.
What are some good companies to sign up with?
I’d love to be able to give you a list of the best companies to sign up with, but it really does depend on your location.
Here are a few of the bigger companies with a number of locations
- Focus Pointe Global operate in 18 cities. You can register with them and see some of their current available studies by location at focusgroup.com.
- Fieldwork have locations in 12 cities across the country and their compensation starts at $75 for a 1-2 hour focus group.
- Adler Wiener have locations in Chicago and Los Angeles and in addition to focus groups, also do things like shop along visits and in-home visits.
Finding local opportunities
Don’t worry if none of the above companies are located in your area – there are A LOT of market research companies out there in different locations across the country.
To find market research companies in your area, just do a Google search for “market research your city” or “focus groups your city”.
It’s always good to sign up with a few different companies to maximise the opportunities available to you. Don’t just join ANY though – there are some scammy companies out there, some of which will ask you to pay them to join. It goes without saying that these ones are to be avoided!
I do focus groups and online surveys for a nice bit of cash every now and then and hope these tips will help you to do the same
